Introduction
Acupuncture is a complete and independent medical system which can be used to treat almost any health condition, whether it is chronic or acute. It is also an excellent preventative healthcare system, which has proven itself over thousands of years in China.
What it is used for?
Acupuncture can be used to help with many conditions including arthritis, anxiety, circulatory problems, depression, digestive problems and IBS, high blood pressure, various aches and pains, low energy, infertility, menstrual problems, migraines, headaches, sciatica, skin conditions and stress.
A brief description
Acupuncture is based on the principle that our health is dependent on the energy inside the body, which is known as Qi (pronounced Chi). The energy moves through the body in a series of channels, and acupuncture points are known entrances to these channels. By inserting fine needles in the right points the acupuncturist stimulates the body’s own healing response to a particular illness and helps to restore natural balance. Acupuncture needles are very fine and when a needle is inserted in the body the sensation is a small tingling or dull ache. Sometimes they are inserted for a short time, sometimes for longer and usually a pleasant feeling of relaxation occurs. The acupuncturist may supplement the needle treatment with moxa, a smoldering herb which is used to warm acupuncture points to encourage the body’s energy to flow smoothly. Massage or cupping may also be used additionally.
We have two acupuncturists, Peter Hewitt and Yvonne Claremont, both of whom are members of the British Acupuncture Council and further information can be obtained on their website www.acupuncture.org.uk.
